History

On the first day of November 1899, Thomas C. Peters began his printing company in a room at 237 Bleecker Street on the 3rd floor in Utica, N.Y. It started from a modest beginning, with only the proprietor and a boy. The printing plant was small, but the equipment was carefully selected, and added to from time to time as the business demanded.

After 28 years at the Bleecker Street address, the plant moved to 143-147 Hotel Street where it remained until the early 1950’s, where it relocated again to 751 State Street. Thomas’ sons, Alfred and Bradley, joined the operation in the early 1920’s. Alfred was the salesman and Bradley was the plant manager.

After many years at State Street, the business moved again. This time to 637 Eagle Street on the lower floor. It was at this time that Richard (Dick) had now joined his Grandfather, Father and Uncle. After High School, Dick went on to college to learn about Printing. After his Graduation from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1950 he enlisted in the military (Army) where he was stationed in West Germany on a peacekeeping mission. It was there that he met his future wife, Sigrid, and after his service was completed, he was honorably discharged and he returned home to marry and join the family business.

Thomas passed in 1957 and his sons ran the business until they decided to retire on June 30th, 1971. It was then, that the business name changed to T.C. Peters Printing Co., Inc. It also was at that time that the Printing equipment changed from Letterpress to Offset Printing. Dick managed the business at Eagle Street from then until 1979 when the business was once again on the move. After renting for 80 years, Dick decided that it was time to own, and after many months of searching, he came upon a building in West Utica/Yorkville at 2336 W. Whitesboro Street.

In June of 1982, his son, Douglas joined the company and together they ran Peters Printing until 1994 when Dick retired. Although he was retired, Dick continued to guide and mentor Doug until his passing in 2018. They enjoyed purchasing new equipment and technology and expanding the plant twice in 1984 and 1994.

Since 1982, every piece of equipment has been replaced at least once. In 1989 the first 2 color press was purchased. In 2008 a Heidelberg 5 color press was purchased and they entered the world of color.

In 2009, it made sense for T.C. Peters to compliment the offset side of the business with the new digital printing technology that was changing our industry. Digital is an electronic way of putting toner on paper and fusing the toner to the sheets. Since then there have been multiple upgrades. Today the digital printing equipment includes two Canon machines (one for high speed black and white, and one for high quality color). For more information please visit our Equipment page. The color machine can do saddle stitching and output booklets. This allows the business to print small run color work with fast turnaround.
